When choosing your processor, intel/AMD, single-dual-quad core, clock speed, threads are the common terms you will find. Most of the cases, it’s a common habit of every pc/laptop consumers buying their machines with famous processor models. In this blog, I will discuss processor basics with processor models comparison. So, what should you consider: Dual-Core or Quad-Core?

What is a Processor?
A processor, or sometimes called it a microprocessor, is a small electronic chip that runs computers. The primary job is to receive input commands and provide the applicable output result. It may seem like an easy function, but a processor can handle trillions of calculations per second. In a word, we can describe a processor as ‘the brain’ of a computer device. Most desktop computers contain a CPU, which is made by either Intel or AMD, and both of the companies commonly use the x86 processor architecture. There are other CPU manufactures who develop CPU, especially for mobile devices.
Terms for selecting a processor:
You must consider these terms before buying a processor. Understand the key factor of how a processor process all your data with its default specifications. But at the very beginning, understand and explain your work. It refers to your work type, workloads. It is very easy to assume that heavy work=heavy power.
‘CORE’ is a common term of a processor that indicates the structure of a processor. You may call a ‘Core’ a part of a subset of your processor. Recently released processors often include multiple processing cores, which work together to process commands. Actually, “cores” are enclosed in one physical unit. They are individual processors and operate separately. There are many types of core-based processors available in the market like single-core, dual-core, quad-core, Hexa core, octa-core, etc. a single-core processor made with one core, Dual-core with two, Quad has four, Hexa and Octa have six and eight cores. Remember, more cores mean more multitasking power.
You may see in the box of a processor showing 1/2/3 or more GHz something! It is showing you the processing power or speed of a processor. The more processing power a processor gets, it’ll complete the task faster.
What should I consider Dual Core or Quad Core?
It depends on your work type or the software/programs you want to run on it. Software designed to run their commanding task into “multiple parts”, then the higher the number of cores, the faster it will run.
You can run many programs at a time without being your computer running too slow, with the help of the Higher number of cores. You can play a computer game while watching/streaming video. Also, connecting with someone and typing a document simultaneously. It will be possible if you get a dual-core or a quad-core processor. But the quad-core might perform some way better than a dual-core as it has more processing cores to perform. Still, you can easily choose dual-core for your daily task and light multitasking at a low price. Don’t buy quad-core if your working software or programs cannot use the full processing power.
Multi-core or Faster clock speed?
It’s hard to tell. Again, it depends on your work. You need fast task completion along with multitasking; you need both. Quad-core is more power consuming than dual. Nowadays, almost every software release is designed to take advantage of quad cores.
The specification needs for your computer:
It will be enough for most people’s needs who got a Dual Core or a Quad-Core computer. One may need other specifications; it is affordable by the availability of many types of processors. A computer for everyday tasks, which includes web browsing and checking email, a simple Dual-Core processor is enough. Want some extra power? Quad-core comes to rescue, but it will hurt your pocket. For hardcore gamers, film editors, animators. A quad-Core computer or maybe even something more powerful is a must.
The Software which Takes Advantage of the Extra Cores:
Basic tasks like word editing, web browsing, video streaming, chatting, video conferencing do not take the real benefit of multi-core CPUs. You may run all the basic needs applications simultaneously. It will benefit you by multitasking performance but not in performance improvement. A dual-core processor will be just fine with that. Now I am listing some of the category wise software that worth dual/quad-core and juice out more performance for you.
Animation: animation software I’ve included doesn’t need that much power of a quad-core while applying effects and modeling. You should concern about clock speed for using them. Revit and Invetor my take extra advantage of a quad core.

- Video editing: software like Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, Sony Vegas, Light Works, iMovie, Coral Video Editor, AVS, etc. need extra core processors like a quad to render and edit videos. Clock speed and the multi-thread is also important.
- Image editing: image editing software performs almost the same in both dual and quad-core processors. They need processing speed more than cores. Dual-core is perfect for them.
- Programming: For programming tasks, base frequency and a single core are perfect unless you work on multiple virtual machines.
- Gaming: Generally, a gaming program is designed to constantly take in and out commands in a very short period. It creates a heavy workflow. So it is very common to have processing power with speed to run and perform a game. A quad-core processor is a better option for gaming. But do check your gaming website for details; some games need more than quad cores.
